Terpineol description

Terpineol is a type of compound found in cardamom and the essential oils of pine, cajeput, and petitgrain, among others. The term terpineol actually covers four types of terpineols, though for the purposes of this definition it refers to alpha-terpineol. Alpha-terpineol is frequently used in flavorings and fragrances due to its lilac scent. Research finds that alpha-terpineol – as is typical of many components found in essential oils – has anti-inflammatory properties. One study found it down-regulates pro-inflammatory factors within skin, assisting in creating a soothing environment. Like many other plant-derived ingredients, terpineol also exhibits antioxidant properties, with some studies indicating it may even help fight pro-aging cell senescence. This benefit could extend skin’s health even as our biological age increases. In addition to this potential, there’s evidence alpha-terpineol has the ability to foster an environment which discourages the overproduction of “bad” microorganisms on skin. This means terpineol could be useful in an anti-acne facial or body cleanser. While terpineol does have some potential to sensitize skin due to its volatile fragrance components, this is primarily a concern when used in larger quantities. The safe, recommended usage levels of terpineol are 0.05% for leave-on products and 0.25% for rinse-off formulas.
