Lactobacillus/Papaya Fruit Ferment Extract description

Lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract is a skin care ingredient produced by fermenting _Carica papaya_ fruit with the beneficial bacteria _Lactobacillus_. Common claims for this ingredient include exfoliation, antioxidant properties and support for skin’s healthy microbiome. While some of these claims are supported by research, more specific studies on this fermented extract are needed to fully validate its safety and efficacy. The exfoliating claims for lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract has theoretical potential due to an enzyme naturally present in papaya, called papain. While papain is noted in research for its ability to break tight junctions of dead skin cells, just how well it can exfoliate skin in this form is currently unknown, and comparative studies for lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract are lacking. Also worth noting, there’s potential risk for enzymes in papaya extracts to irritate skin and create an itching sensation (although this is of greater concern when pure papain is used). As for the antioxidant benefits of lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract, research confirms these properties, and the fermentation process enhances their bioavailability to skin, meaning stronger multi-level protection from environmental stressors (we explain why via our article on fermented skin care). Preliminary research indicates papaya extracts may also have pro-collagen benefits, although it is noted that more in vivo studies are needed to validate. Last but not least, the prebiotic/probiotic properties of lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract show promise for supporting skin’s microbiome, making it more resilient against stressors that disrupt microbiome balance. All things considered, while lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract exhibits potential for certain aspects of skin care, it’s more of a gamble compared to well established, well studied skin care ingredients that have offer solid proof of efficacy and non-irritancy. The recommended use level of lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract in skin care ranges from 1–10%, depending on formulary goals.
