Solanum Tuberosum Extract description

_Solanum tuberosum_ extract comes from a plant more commonly known as the potato. Used for millennia as a human food source, this member of the nightshade family of plants is also a valuable additive in skin care products. Research finds that potato extract has multiple benefits when applied to skin. As is the case with most plant-derived ingredients, it exerts antioxidant properties that fight off the effects of pro-aging free radical damage. Studies also indicate potato extract exerts soothing effects on skin. Research shows that compounds known as anthocyanins taken from potato extract might inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme whose overproduction plays a role in many types of skin discolorations. As such, this extract could have value in formulations designed to fade the appearance of dark spots. The natural starch found in potatoes can have texture-refining and absorbent properties such as for rinse-off masks for oily skin. Use levels of _Solanum tuberosum_ extract in cosmetics range from 0.01–20%, with greater amounts typically used in rinse-off products. Hydrating and soothing benefits can be gained from amounts between 0.01–1%.
